The Royal Decree: You Are My Son
The king now reports God’s decree: “Thou art my Son.” In the Old Testament royal world, sonship language marks the Davidic king’s covenant relationship to God, not biological generation. Second Samuel 7:14 supplies the background: God promises to be father to David’s royal son.
The New Testament repeatedly applies Psalm 2:7 to Jesus. Acts 13:33 uses it within Paul’s proclamation of God’s saving action in Jesus, Hebrews 1:5 uses it to distinguish the Son from angels, and Hebrews 5:5 uses it when discussing Christ’s appointment. The psalm’s promise that the nations become the king’s inheritance also fits the New Testament’s portrait of Jesus’ worldwide authority. Because the later writers themselves reuse the verse, this belongs in the highest-confidence Christological category: explicit inspired application, not merely resemblance.
