The Beloved Son, the Spirit, and the Wilderness
Jesus comes from Nazareth, is baptized in the Jordan, sees the heavens torn open, receives the descending Spirit, and hears the heavenly declaration that he is the beloved Son in whom God is well pleased. The same Spirit then drives him into the wilderness, where he is tested by Satan for forty days among the wild beasts and served by angels.
Where this fits in the story: the baptism scene gathers royal-Son language from Psalm 2 and Servant language from Isaiah 42 around Jesus, while the torn heavens recall prophetic longing for God to break in. The wilderness and forty-day testing place Jesus inside Israel’s testing story, but Mark presents him as the Spirit-anointed Son confronting the adversary at the outset of his mission.
