At Caesarea Philippi, Peter confesses Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus attributes the recognition to the Father and responds with the rock, church, gates of Hades, keys of the kingdom, and binding/loosing sayings—one of Matthew’s densest ecclesial passages.
Evidence boundary: “this rock” has major Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant interpretive histories involving Peter, Peter’s confession, Christ, or combinations. A responsible reading should present the strongest options and distinguish the text from later institutional claims.
Who Jesus is — Peter confesses Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Messiah and Son of God overlap with Israel’s royal hopes, but the next verses immediately force the disciples to learn that this Messiah’s road includes suffering, death, and resurrection.
