Eyewitnesses of His Majesty on the Holy Mountain
Peter grounds the proclaimed power and coming of Jesus in witnessed glory, not “cunningly devised fables.” He recalls the event Christians know as the Transfiguration: Jesus received honor and glory from the Father, the heavenly voice identified him as the beloved Son, and Peter says, “we heard” that voice on the holy mountain. The Gospel accounts and 2 Peter illuminate one another. In the Gospels, selected disciples see Jesus’ glory and hear the Father’s voice; here that remembered revelation becomes evidence for confidence in Christ’s future coming. The mountain is therefore more than scenery. Throughout Scripture, mountains repeatedly become places of divine revelation and kingdom disclosure, and this particular mountain scene points from revealed majesty toward the promised return of the King.
