The child associated with the Lord’s saving visitation is brought into the temple, inviting comparison with Malachi’s promise that the Lord sought by the people would come to his temple. Luke does not explicitly cite Malachi here, so present as a possible canonical resonance.

Luke 1 has already framed John in Malachi's Elijah-forerunner language; Luke 3 now identifies his wilderness ministry through Isaiah 40. Canonical sequencing evidence: Luke joins Malachi’s forerunner portrait to Isaiah’s wilderness-way text as John’s public ministry begins.

Spirit, fire, winnowing, and burning chaff combine purification and judgment imagery. A careful reading should avoid flattening 'fire' into only blessing or only judgment. Motif evidence: John’s fire-and-winnowing preaching intensifies Malachi’s coming-one imagery of purification and judgment without functioning as a direct quotation.

Malachi’s Lord suddenly coming to his temple is an important canonical horizon, especially because Luke already used Malachi’s messenger theme for John. Luke does not quote Malachi here, so mark this as strong resonance rather than direct fulfillment.

John's preparatory role and Elijah-like profile fit Malachi's messenger/Elijah expectation; Matthew later makes this relationship more explicit in Jesus' teaching about John.

Jesus explicitly quotes the messenger-before-you wording from Malachi 3:1 and applies it to John the Baptist.

Nahum’s “Who can stand?” before divine indignation belongs to a prophetic trajectory later heard in Malachi’s “who may abide” and “who shall stand.”

Exodus promises, “Behold, I send an Angel before thee,” while Malachi announces, “Behold, I will send my messenger” before the Lord’s coming. The messenger-before language forms a strong canonical echo.

Isaiah’s voice prepares the way of the LORD; Malachi’s messenger prepares the way before the LORD. The shared way-preparation language becomes especially important when the Gospels combine these texts around John the Baptist.

Mark opens the Gospel by combining Malachi’s messenger text with Isaiah’s wilderness-way text, presenting John as the promised forerunner. Mark opens by using Malachi’s messenger promise for John’s preparatory ministry.

Jesus explicitly quotes Malachi’s messenger promise when explaining John the Baptist’s role.

Luke 1:76 says John will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, strongly echoing Malachi 3:1’s messenger who prepares the way. In Luke 1 this stands beside the explicit Elijah/heart-turning reuse of Malachi 4:5–6, creating a concentrated Malachi-forerunner portrait.

Malachi lists oppressing hired workers among sins drawing divine judgment; James announces the same prophetic justice. Apostolic-theme evidence: both Malachi and James place withheld or oppressed laborers under the immediate hearing and judgment of the Lord.

Revelation's 'who shall be able to stand?' closely echoes Malachi's question at the coming day.
