The Gospel Begins: John Prepares the Way
Mark opens without genealogy or infancy narrative: the good news begins with prophetic preparation. The messenger language of Malachi and the wilderness-way language of Isaiah converge on John, whose ministry of repentance, confession, baptism, and expectation prepares for one greater than himself. John can immerse in water; the Coming One will baptize in the Holy Ghost.
Where this fits in the story: Isaiah 40 announces comfort and the LORD’s coming after exile, while Malachi 3 announces a messenger preparing the way before the Lord. Mark places Jesus inside that promised divine-arrival horizon from the opening lines. John’s wilderness setting and Elijah-like clothing also draw the reader back into Israel’s prophetic world.
