Fruit Worthy of Repentance and the Coming One
Crowds came to John, and he called them to true repentance, warning them not to rely on their ancestry to Abraham. This was a reminder of Ezekiel 18:30–32, where God called Israel to repent and live.
The wider biblical story comes into focus here. Acts 1:5 explicitly recalls John's water-versus-Holy-Spirit baptism promise, and Acts 2 narrates the Spirit's outpouring. Luke explicitly contrasts those who accepted John’s baptism with Pharisees and lawyers who did not, tying present responses to the repentance ministry narrated in Luke 3. Jesus makes the leaders answer the question of John’s baptism before he answers theirs. Luke has already grounded John in the prophetic forerunner story; their refusal to judge John honestly exposes their inability to judge Jesus’ authority.
