The Cries of Defrauded Laborers Reach the Lord of Hosts
James shifts into prophetic woe. Corroded treasure and moth-eaten garments become witnesses against rich oppressors who have hoarded wealth “for the last days.” The most concrete charge is withheld wages: the pay of harvest workers cries out, and the workers’ cries reach the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth—the Lord of Hosts. Luxury has fattened the oppressors for a day of slaughter.
Where this fits in the story: Leviticus 19:13 and Deuteronomy 24:14–15 forbid withholding a laborer’s wages, and the prophets condemn wealth built by injustice. James’s phrase about the cry reaching the Lord’s ears strongly evokes this Torah-prophetic justice tradition.
