Jerusalem, Jerusalem: Lament, Desolation, and the Coming One
The chapter ends not in cold denunciation but grief. Jesus longs to gather Jerusalem’s children “as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings,” announces a desolate house, and says they will not see him until they say the Psalm 118 welcome: “Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.”
Where this fits in the story: divine wing imagery expresses refuge in the Psalms; prophetic judgment on temple/Jerusalem can coexist with longing for restoration.
Where Scripture takes it next: Jesus leaves the temple and predicts its destruction in chapter 24.
Evidence boundary: the lament should block anti-Jewish triumphalism. Jesus’ judgment language emerges from within Israel’s prophetic tradition and is spoken with expressed longing.
