Chronicles interprets Judah's exile as the land keeping/enjoying Sabbaths during desolation, directly recalling Leviticus 26's wording while joining it with Jeremiah's seventy years.

Second Chronicles 36 interprets Judah’s exile as a period in which the land finally enjoys its Sabbaths, directly recalling Leviticus’s Sabbath-year and covenant-curse logic. Leviticus 25 commands land rest, and Leviticus 26 warns that exile and desolation will make the land rest when Israel has refused that covenant rhythm.

Chronicles itself summarizes Israel’s repeated rejection and mocking of God’s messengers until judgment, closely matching Jesus’ accusation about the inherited pattern of persecuting prophets.

The repeated rejection of God’s servants in 2 Chronicles 36 provides a major biblical narrative backdrop for Jesus’ vineyard parable, where successive servants are beaten or rejected before the beloved son is sent. Luke does not quote Chronicles directly, but the tenants’ violence belongs to Israel’s wider prophetic-rejection pattern.

Israel's Scriptures themselves repeatedly describe generations rejecting and killing God's messengers. Jesus places the present conflict inside that prophetic self-critique rather than attacking Judaism from outside it.

Second Chronicles 36 retells Jerusalem’s fall and exile while adding an explicit theological summary of rejected messengers, accumulated wrath, temple destruction, and sabbath-rest for the land. The same catastrophe in 2 Kings is therefore interpreted from a complementary canonical angle rather than duplicated without purpose.

Chronicles explains Jerusalem’s fall after repeated rejection of God’s messengers and prophets. Jesus later laments Jerusalem as the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to it. The New Testament deliberately reuses this prophetic-rejection pattern.

Second Chronicles 36 and Nehemiah 9 both interpret Israel’s history as a cycle of prophetic warning, refusal, judgment, and continuing divine compassion. The relationship is strong postexilic canonical self-interpretation: both texts explain catastrophe from within Israel’s own covenant history rather than as a merely political failure.
