Dwelling in the Secret Place: Refuge Without Fear
Psalm 91 uses vivid poetry to celebrate the security of trusting the Most High amid terror, pestilence, violence, and danger. Its promises are genuine calls to confidence in God, but they should not be turned into a guarantee that faithful people will never suffer illness, injury, persecution, or death. The rest of Scripture includes faithful sufferers, and even this psalm becomes a test case in the temptation of Jesus. Its center is God as refuge, not a formula for physical invulnerability.
