Hebrews goes straight back to Genesis 22: Abraham offered Isaac by faith, even though Isaac was the son through whom the promise was supposed to continue. Hebrews says Abraham reasoned that God was able to raise the dead.

Genesis says Abram leaves for Canaan when God calls him. Hebrews names Abraham and explains the deeper significance: he obeyed by faith and lived in the promised land as a sojourner while looking for a city built by God.

Hebrews explicitly names Sarah and interprets her conception beyond normal childbearing age as faith in the faithfulness of the One who promised. The inspired reading highlights faith while Genesis preserves the fuller narrative of laughter, uncertainty, and fulfillment.

Genesis 21 finally records what God had promised: Sarah conceives and bears Isaac at the appointed time. Hebrews names Sarah and interprets that impossible-looking birth as faith in the faithfulness of the One who promised.

Hebrews quotes the earlier Genesis promise, “In Isaac shall thy seed be called,” while discussing the binding of Isaac. That makes the tension unmistakable: Abraham is asked to offer the very son through whom God said the promise would continue.

In Genesis 23 Abraham calls himself a stranger and sojourner even while living in the land God promised him. Hebrews later describes the patriarchs as strangers and pilgrims who were looking for a better country.

Hebrews 11:20 looks back at Isaac blessing Jacob and Esau and interprets those blessings as acts of faith about the future. Genesis gives the family drama; Hebrews tells readers how to understand Isaac’s blessing in the larger faith story.

Hebrews 11:21 explicitly interprets Jacob’s deathbed blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh in Genesis 48 as an act of faith, showing that the crossed-hands blessing is read as confidence in God’s future purposes rather than mere family preference.

Hebrews 11:22 explicitly interprets Joseph’s deathbed reference to Israel’s future departure and his command concerning his bones as faith, turning Genesis’s unusual burial request into a witness to confidence in God’s promised exodus.

Hebrews 11:21 remembers Jacob worshipping and blessing near death; Genesis 47 records his worship after securing Joseph’s oath to bury him with his fathers. Dying in Egypt, Jacob still acts in faith toward promises and a homeland beyond his own lifetime.

Hebrews interprets Joseph’s command concerning his bones as an act of faith in Israel’s future exodus; Joshua records the burial that brings that faith-filled request to its landward completion.

Hebrews’ use of monogenēs for Isaac demonstrates “only/unique” rather than simple biological “only child.”
