Joseph Buried in Jacobs Purchased Field
Joshua 24 concludes the book with a covenant-renewal assembly at Shechem. Joshua recounts God’s acts from Abraham through the exodus and conquest, calls Israel to exclusive service of the LORD, records the covenant witness, and closes with the deaths and burials of Joshua and Eleazar and the burial of Joseph’s bones.
Joshua explicitly remembers Jacob’s purchase of land at Shechem from the sons of Hamor, directly recalling Genesis 33:19 and showing the lasting significance of that patriarchal landholding in Israel’s later story.
Joshua 24:32 records Joseph’s bones, carried up from Egypt, finally buried at Shechem. The verse completes the hope voiced at the end of Genesis and the journey begun in Exodus, turning Joseph’s deathbed faith into visible historical fulfillment.
Genesis 48 gives Joseph an extra “shechem/portion” above his brothers. Joshua 24:32 later records Joseph’s burial at Shechem in the parcel Jacob bought and says the property became an inheritance of Joseph’s descendants, creating a strong canonical Shechem–Joseph–inheritance association.
Genesis ends with Joseph’s sworn request that his bones be carried up when God visits Israel; Joshua 24 records their burial at Shechem after the exodus and settlement. The later burial closes a promise loop and visibly fulfills Joseph’s land-directed hope.
Exodus records Moses carrying Joseph’s bones out of Egypt in fulfillment of Joseph’s oath, and Joshua later records their burial at Shechem. The same bones and promise are explicitly named, completing a multi-book Genesis–Exodus–Joshua thread of faith in God’s promise to bring Israel into the land.
Hebrews interprets Joseph’s command concerning his bones as an act of faith in Israel’s future exodus; Joshua records the burial that brings that faith-filled request to its landward completion.
