Romans directly quotes God’s words from the Hagar-and-Ishmael crisis: “In Isaac shall thy seed be called.” Paul uses that statement to distinguish physical descent from the line of promise.

Paul does not merely mention Hagar and Isaac in Galatians 4—he actually quotes Sarah’s command to cast out the bondwoman and her son, then uses the story inside his inspired argument about slavery and promise.

Hebrews quotes the earlier Genesis promise, “In Isaac shall thy seed be called,” while discussing the binding of Isaac. That makes the tension unmistakable: Abraham is asked to offer the very son through whom God said the promise would continue.

Genesis 16 and Genesis 21 form a paired Hagar-and-Ishmael wilderness pattern: household conflict drives Hagar into the wilderness, divine intervention addresses the crisis, Ishmael’s future is secured, and water frames survival. The episodes are clearly related while remaining distinct events.

Genesis 17 promises that Ishmael will be blessed, fruitful, multiplied, and made a great nation even while the covenant is established with Isaac. Genesis 21 preserves that distinction: Isaac is the named seed line, while God again promises to make Ishmael a nation and personally hears and preserves him in the wilderness.

Galatians 4:30 directly quotes Sarah’s demand from Genesis 21:10 and then interprets the Hagar-Ishmael inheritance conflict within Paul’s argument about slavery, freedom, and promise. The connection is explicit quotation followed by inspired apostolic interpretation.
