By Faith He Went Out — Abram Enters the Promised Land as a Sojourner
Genesis 12:4–9 shows Abram responding to God’s call. He leaves Haran, enters Canaan, passes through Shechem, and receives a further promise: “Unto thy seed will I give this land.” Yet the text immediately notes that the Canaanite is already in the land. Promise is therefore present before possession. Abram responds by building altars and calling upon the name of the LORD while continuing as a traveler through territory he does not yet own.
Hebrews 11:8–10 explicitly interprets this movement as faith. Abraham obeys when called to go out, not knowing where he was going, and later lives in the promised land as in a strange country. Hebrews then widens the horizon: Abraham looked for “a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.” The New Testament does not erase the historical land promise; it uses Abraham’s life as a sojourner to expose the forward-looking character of his faith.
