Luz Remembered — Joseph’s Sons Receive a Double Share in Israel
As Jacob nears death, he anchors Joseph’s inheritance not in Egypt’s prosperity but in God’s appearance at Luz/Bethel: God promised to make him fruitful, multiply him, and give the land to his seed. Jacob then receives Ephraim and Manasseh as his own sons, “as Reuben and Simeon,” effectively giving Joseph a double tribal standing in Israel. First Chronicles 5:1 later explicitly explains the inheritance logic: Reuben lost the birthright and it was given to Joseph’s sons; Joshua 14:4 reflects the result by counting Manasseh and Ephraim as two tribes. Jacob also remembers Rachel’s death near Ephrath/Bethlehem, reconnecting Joseph’s family to an old wound in the covenant journey. The text does not explicitly say Rachel’s death caused the adoption decision, so that link should not be asserted. The primary thread is covenant continuity: promise at Bethel, land, multiplication, and inheritance carried into the next generation.
