First John directly names Cain and says he murdered his brother because his own works were evil and his brother’s were righteous. John uses the Genesis story as a warning about hatred and as a contrast with the love that should mark God’s people.

Genesis says Abel’s blood cries from the ground. Hebrews 12 picks up that image and says Jesus’ blood “speaketh better things than that of Abel.” Abel’s blood cries out after an unjust death; Jesus’ blood becomes the center of a better covenant and a different kind of word.

Jude says the false teachers have gone “in the way of Cain.” Genesis 4 shows what that way looks like: Cain resists God’s warning, turns against his brother, and keeps moving deeper into sin. Jude is telling the reader, “This is not a brand-new kind of rebellion—you have seen this road before.”

Luke 11 preserves a parallel Gospel witness to the Abel tradition also seen in Matthew 23. Jesus names “the blood of Abel” as the beginning of a long history of righteous bloodshed, treating the murder in Genesis 4 as the first example in a continuing pattern of persecuting the righteous.

Abel’s blood cries from the ground for justice in Genesis 4; Revelation’s slain witnesses likewise cry for God to judge and vindicate their blood. The later vision expands the righteous-blood pattern from one victim to a persecuted community.

Jesus explicitly reaches back to righteous Abel and his shed blood, placing the murder of Genesis 4 at the beginning of a scriptural history of violence against the righteous. Abel’s story becomes part of Jesus’ indictment of recurring persecution.

Song 7:10 uses the rare Hebrew noun teshuqah also found in Genesis 4:7. The shared word creates a strong lexical link, while the settings sharply differ: sin’s threatening desire toward Cain versus welcomed desire within mutual love.
