Slain Witnesses Cry for Justice
Revelation 6:9–10 shows slain witnesses beneath the altar crying, “How long?” for righteous judgment. Their prayer belongs to the long biblical lament tradition in which faithful sufferers appeal to God’s justice rather than taking vengeance into their own hands. The altar setting also presents their deaths as lives poured out in faithful witness.
Revelation 6:9–11 opens the fifth seal and reveals martyrs beneath the altar asking how long judgment will be delayed. They receive white robes and are told to rest until the number of fellow servants who will also be killed is complete. The passage holds together divine justice, present waiting, and the costly witness of the saints.
Abel’s blood cries from the ground for justice in Genesis 4; Revelation’s slain witnesses likewise cry for God to judge and vindicate their blood. The later vision expands the righteous-blood pattern from one victim to a persecuted community.
Revelation’s slain witnesses cry for God to judge and avenge their blood, resonating with Deuteronomy 32’s promise that YHWH will avenge the blood of his servants. The plea awaits the vindication promised in the Song.
Revelation 6:10 strongly echoes Psalm 79:5’s “How long?” lament as slain witnesses cry for God to judge and avenge blood. The shared question and justice appeal place Revelation’s martyrs inside the Psalter’s tradition of faithful lament awaiting divine action.
