Prophets, Righteous Blood, and This Generation
Matthew 23 is fierce, but its target is hypocrisy—not Torah and not Jewish people as a whole. Jesus criticizes leaders who teach without doing, seek religious status, and obsess over small matters while neglecting justice, mercy, and faith. He places their rejection of God's messengers in the long biblical pattern that begins with righteous Abel, then ends the chapter by grieving over Jerusalem and longing to gather its children.
The leaders honor dead prophets while Jesus says they are completing the same persecuting story. His sweep “from righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias” reaches across Scripture’s history of murdered righteous witnesses.
Where this fits in the story: Abel is the first murdered righteous person in Genesis; Zechariah son of Jehoiada is killed in the temple court in Chronicles. The phrase may function as a canonical sweep from early Genesis to late Hebrew Bible order.
Where Scripture takes it next: Jesus himself will be rejected in Jerusalem, followed by persecution of his messengers.
Evidence boundary: Matthew calls the Zechariah “son of Barachias,” while Chronicles names Zechariah son of Jehoiada. Explanations include different Zechariahs, textual/name conflation, or other possibilities; the difficulty should be stated, not hidden.
Jesus explicitly reaches back to righteous Abel and his shed blood, placing the murder of Genesis 4 at the beginning of a scriptural history of violence against the righteous. Abel’s story becomes part of Jesus’ indictment of recurring persecution.
Israel's Scriptures themselves repeatedly describe generations rejecting and killing God's messengers. Jesus places the present conflict inside that prophetic self-critique rather than attacking Judaism from outside it.
Jesus names Zechariah killed between sanctuary and altar. 2 Chronicles 24 records Zechariah son of Jehoiada being killed in the temple court. Matthew says 'son of Barachias,' creating an identification/textual-historical question that must be shown honestly rather than silently harmonized.

Jesus' warning that messengers will be flogged in synagogues and pursued city to city mirrors the mission-persecution instructions in Matthew 10.
Israel's Scriptures themselves repeatedly describe generations rejecting and killing God's messengers. Jesus places the present conflict inside that prophetic self-critique rather than attacking Judaism from outside it.
Chronicles explains Jerusalem’s fall after repeated rejection of God’s messengers and prophets. Jesus later laments Jerusalem as the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to it. The New Testament deliberately reuses this prophetic-rejection pattern.
Lamentations blames Jerusalem’s prophets and priests for shedding righteous blood in the city; Matthew places the shedding of righteous blood immediately before Jesus laments Jerusalem and announces its coming desolation. The shared bloodguilt-and-city-judgment pattern makes the intertext significant.
