Clean Outside, Corrupt Inside: Justice, Love, Prophetic Blood, and the Key of Knowledge
At a Pharisee’s table Jesus attacks a religion of polished surfaces that neglects the inside. He condemns the neglect of justice and the love of God, the hunger for honor, burdens placed on others, complicity with rejected prophets, and the taking away of the key of knowledge.
Where this fits in the story: Israel’s prophets repeatedly insist that ritual practice cannot substitute for justice, mercy, and covenant faithfulness. Jesus’ woes stand inside that prophetic tradition even as he brings it to bear on contemporary leaders.
