From Perez to David—and Beyond
Ruth ends with genealogy. The final five verses trace ten names from Perez to David: Perez, Hezron, Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon, Salmon, Boaz, Obed, Jesse, David. The book’s domestic story is therefore revealed to be a royal-line story.
This genealogy connects backward to Genesis 38, where Perez is born to Judah and Tamar, and forward to 1 Chronicles 2, which preserves the Judahite family line. Most significantly for Christian canonical reading, Matthew 1 follows the same trajectory and explicitly names Tamar, Ruth, Boaz, Obed, Jesse, and David on the way to Jesus Christ.
