The Magi Seek the King in Bethlehem
Foreign magi arrive asking for the one “born King of the Jews,” while Herod and Jerusalem are troubled. The chief priests and scribes identify Bethlehem through Micah, and the visitors eventually worship the child and present gifts. Matthew is already creating a reversal that will run through the Gospel: outsiders respond to Israel’s king while powerful insiders can resist him.
Where this fits in the story: Micah 5 locates the ruler in Bethlehem and places him in Davidic geography. Psalm 72 and Isaiah 60 supply strong later canonical resonances of nations bringing tribute, light, gold, and frankincense, but Matthew does not call the magi kings or quote those passages.
