Matthew 1 — Overview
Matthew does not begin Jesus' story as though the Old Testament has ended and a disconnected story has started. His first line reaches backward to David and Abraham, and his genealogy carries the reader through promise, kingship, exile, and finally the Messiah. Then Matthew explicitly quotes Isaiah's Immanuel prophecy. Before Jesus speaks a single sermon, Matthew has already told the reader: this story belongs to the whole story of Scripture.
