Who May Enter the Assembly of the Lord
Deuteronomy 23:1–8 is the movement “Who May Enter the Assembly of the Lord.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD.” It closes with: “The children that are begotten of them shall enter into the congregation of the LORD in their third generation.”
Scripture also places this passage inside a wider canonical network. Deuteronomy 23:7 commands Israel not to abhor an Edomite “for he is thy brother”; Obadiah 10 names violence against brother Jacob as Edom’s central crime. Deuteronomy 23 restricts Ammonites and Moabites from the assembly, while Ruth repeatedly identifies Ruth as a Moabite woman who is welcomed in Bethlehem and becomes great-grandmother of David.
