From Jesus Back to Adam, Son of God
Luke traces Jesus’ genealogy backward beyond Abraham and David all the way to Adam, “which was the son of God.” The move widens the horizon of the Gospel. Jesus belongs to Israel’s royal and covenant story, but Luke also places him inside the story of the whole human race.
A major “aha”: Luke positions this genealogy between the heavenly declaration of Jesus as Son and the wilderness testing of that sonship. The genealogy therefore does more than supply ancestry; it prepares the reader to compare Jesus with Adam and with Israel, both of whom face obedience-testing in Scripture.
