Jude says the false teachers have gone “in the way of Cain.” Genesis 4 shows what that way looks like: Cain resists God’s warning, turns against his brother, and keeps moving deeper into sin. Jude is telling the reader, “This is not a brand-new kind of rebellion—you have seen this road before.”

Jude names Enoch and even tells us which Enoch he means: “the seventh from Adam.” Genesis 5 places Enoch in that exact family line. Jude then tells us more about Enoch—a prophecy of coming judgment—that Genesis itself does not record.

Jude says the false teachers have run after “the error of Balaam for reward.” Numbers 31 helps explain the warning: Balaam’s influence was connected with leading Israel into sin. Jude uses Balaam as a picture of spiritual corruption tied to selfish gain.

Jude says the intruders are following “the gainsaying of Core”—Korah. Numbers 16 tells that story: Korah rejects God-given authority, leads a rebellion, and comes under judgment. Jude uses Korah as an old warning for a new rebellion.

Ezekiel condemns shepherds who “feed themselves” instead of caring for God’s flock. Jude describes corrupt people at the church’s love feasts as “feeding themselves without fear.” The shared picture is simple: leaders who should care for others are using the community to serve themselves.

Proverbs pictures a person who boasts about a gift but never gives it as “clouds and wind without rain.” Jude calls the false teachers “clouds…without water.” In both pictures, something looks promising from a distance but produces none of the life-giving good it seemed to promise.

Isaiah says wicked people are like a restless sea that churns up mud and filth. Jude uses the same kind of picture for the false teachers: “raging waves of the sea” that throw up their own shame. The image says their inner corruption will not stay hidden—it keeps surfacing.

Jude and 2 Peter sound strikingly alike in this section. Both describe arrogant people who speak recklessly, behave like irrational animals, connect their corruption with Balaam, damage communal meals, and use dry or waterless images for people who promise more than they give.

Jude calls the false teachers “murmurers.” Paul warns Christians not to “murmur” like Israel did in the wilderness. That small repeated word carries a big warning: grumbling against God was part of Israel’s old rebellion, and Jude sees the same rebellious spirit showing up again.

Long before Jude, Deuteronomy pictured the LORD coming with “ten thousands of saints”—holy ones. Jude’s Enoch prophecy says, “the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints” to judge. The wording creates a powerful Bible-wide picture of the Lord arriving with a holy heavenly company.

First Thessalonians says the Lord Jesus Christ will come “with all his saints.” Jude announces the Lord coming “with ten thousands of his saints” for judgment. The shared image connects Jude’s judgment scene with the New Testament expectation of Christ’s glorious coming.

Jude explicitly warns about those who run greedily after Balaam’s error for reward; Numbers 22 shows Balak offering Balaam great honor and reward while Balaam negotiates whether he may go.

Zechariah says the LORD will come “and all the saints with thee.” Jude’s Enoch prophecy announces, “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints” to execute judgment. The passages join the same Bible-wide picture: the Lord arrives in judgment accompanied by a holy heavenly company.
