Balaam’s Counsel and Israel’s Trespass
Moses angrily explains that the women were involved in causing Israel to trespass “through the counsel of Balaam” at Peor. That statement is the book’s own later interpretation of Chapter 25 and explains why Revelation can later say Balaam taught Balak to put a stumbling block before Israel.
Jude says the false teachers have run after “the error of Balaam for reward.” Numbers 31 helps explain the warning: Balaam’s influence was connected with leading Israel into sin. Jude uses Balaam as a picture of spiritual corruption tied to selfish gain.
