Korah’s Rebellion and Judgment
Korah and 250 leaders challenge the authority of Moses and especially Aaron’s priesthood. Their slogan contains a truth—YHWH’s congregation is holy—but uses it to erase roles YHWH himself assigned. Moses answers that YHWH will show who belongs to him and who may approach the sanctuary.
Dathan and Abiram refuse even to meet Moses and bitterly call Egypt a land “flowing with milk and honey.” That is a stunning reversal: the biblical phrase normally describes the promised land. Rebellion has rewritten slavery as paradise and Moses as the oppressor.
YHWH separates the congregation from the rebels. Dathan and Abiram’s households are swallowed by the earth, while fire consumes the 250 men offering incense. Psalm 106 and Jude later retell Korah’s rebellion as a lasting warning about envy, unauthorized religious ambition, and rejection of God-given authority.
Jude says the intruders are following “the gainsaying of Core”—Korah. Numbers 16 tells that story: Korah rejects God-given authority, leads a rebellion, and comes under judgment. Jude uses Korah as an old warning for a new rebellion.
