Deuteronomy interprets the manna as part of God’s wilderness testing, humbling Israel and teaching that human life depends on every word proceeding from YHWH. The later text therefore supplies an inspired theological explanation of the Exodus provision.

Jesus returns explicitly to the manna story and declares that the Father gives the true bread from heaven; He identifies Himself as the Bread of Life who gives life to the world. John therefore provides an inspired Christological development of Exodus’ wilderness provision.

Prayer for today's bread naturally resonates with daily wilderness provision and dependence on God, especially after Matthew 4's explicit manna/Deuteronomy connection, but Matthew 6 does not quote Exodus.

Paul’s command to do all things without “murmurings” plausibly recalls Israel’s wilderness murmuring after the Exodus, especially because the surrounding paragraph also echoes Deuteronomy 32’s crooked-generation language. The wilderness-generation background is therefore stronger than the single word alone would suggest.

Paul interprets Israel’s wilderness provision as “spiritual food” while reviewing the Exodus generation as a warning and example for the church. Manna is the distinctive Exodus provision behind the food reference, though Paul’s theological description goes beyond merely retelling the event.

Exodus 16 begins the manna provision in the wilderness, while Joshua 5 explicitly marks the day it ceases after Israel eats the produce of Canaan. The two passages form narrative bookends to a provision that sustained Israel throughout the wilderness years.

Ezra 9:4–15 and Nehemiah 9:32–37 both use communal confession to interpret the restored community’s continued distress through covenant guilt, exile, and undeserved mercy. The relationship is postexilic covenant self-examination rather than direct quotation: both leaders place present problems inside Israel’s longer history of unfaithfulness and grace.

Jesus feeds a large crowd with bread in a wilderness setting, creating a strong canonical echo of God feeding Israel with manna in Exodus 16. The pattern is especially suggestive because the crowd is in a deserted place and receives provision beyond ordinary resources, but Mark never calls the food manna.
