Israel Shared Covenant Privileges Yet Fell in the Wilderness
Paul begins with Israel’s exodus generation: all were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank spiritual drink. Yet “with many of them God was not well pleased.” Shared privileges did not make persistent rebellion harmless.
Paul describes the sea-crossing as being “baptized unto Moses” and then gives an extraordinary Christological interpretation: “they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” The exodus story is not merely ancient background; Paul reads Israel’s provision through the completed revelation of Christ.
