Joshua 5 — Chapter Study Overview
Joshua 5 is a chapter of preparation before battle. The nations of Canaan trembled at God’s power, Israel renewed its covenant through circumcision, and they celebrated the first Passover in the promised land. God shifted their provision from manna to the produce of Canaan, marking a new chapter in their journey. Finally, Joshua’s encounter with the commander of the Lord’s army set the stage for the battles ahead, reminding Israel that their success depended on God’s leadership, not their own strength.
Coming Savior connection: Christian readers have often asked whether the Commander of the LORD’s army is a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ, especially because Joshua falls before him and is told to remove his shoe on holy ground. The passage itself never names the figure as the Messiah, and Hebrews 2:10’s “captain of their salvation” is not a quotation of Joshua 5. The safest Christ-centered reading is therefore two-layered: this scene reveals that Israel’s true Commander is divine, while the New Testament later presents Jesus as the ultimate leader who brings God’s people to salvation. The Christophany identification is an ancient and serious tradition, but it should be labeled as interpretation rather than explicit prophecy.
