Prayer in Secret and the Lord's Prayer
Matthew 6 moves kingdom righteousness into motives. Giving, praying, and fasting can be good acts done for the wrong audience. Jesus redirects disciples to the Father who sees in secret, gives them a prayer centered first on God's name and kingdom, warns that wealth can become a rival master, and teaches trust instead of life-consuming worry.
Jesus contrasts prayer aimed at human admiration with prayer directed to the Father, then gives a model centered first on God’s name, kingdom, and will before daily provision, forgiveness, and deliverance. The prayer gathers major biblical themes—holy name, kingdom, bread, debt, temptation, evil—into the disciple’s ordinary speech to God.
Where this fits in the story: Scripture’s prayers repeatedly combine God’s honor with dependence, confession, and covenant mercy. Daily bread naturally recalls God’s provision without requiring “bread” to be reduced to manna alone.
Where Scripture takes it next: Matthew returns to forgiveness in chapter 18 and to watchful prayer under temptation in Gethsemane.
Evidence boundary: “vain repetitions” does not mean every repeated prayer is forbidden; Jesus himself repeats prayer in Gethsemane. The problem is empty or manipulative speech, not repetition as such.
Prayer for today's bread naturally resonates with daily wilderness provision and dependence on God, especially after Matthew 4's explicit manna/Deuteronomy connection, but Matthew 6 does not quote Exodus.
Jesus' address to 'our Father' stands within Israel's scriptural language for God as Father, while giving the disciples a direct communal pattern of prayer.

Agur asks for neither poverty nor riches but the food appointed for him; Jesus teaches disciples to ask the Father for daily bread.
