Within the book’s larger story, this section advances several important biblical threads. Bread from Heaven: Manna teaches that human life depends on every word from God; Jesus quotes this lesson in the wilderness. Wilderness Testing and Faithfulness: Forty years of hunger, manna, testing, and discipline explain the wilderness as a school of dependence on God’s word.

Scripture also places this passage inside a wider canonical network. Jesus answers the bread temptation from Deuteronomy's explanation of Israel's wilderness hunger and testing, placing his own forty-day test inside Israel's forty-year story. Jesus answers the bread temptation with Deuteronomy 8:3, a text interpreting Israel's wilderness hunger as God's test and training. Matthew therefore places Jesus' testing inside Israel's wilderness story. Deuteronomy interprets the manna as part of God’s wilderness testing, humbling Israel and teaching dependence on every word that proceeds from Him.

The key reading question is therefore not simply, “What rule or event appears here?” but, “What does this movement teach Israel about the LORD, covenant loyalty, life in the land, and the consequences of trusting or resisting His word?”

[Christological calibration — Explicit NT Use] Jesus answers Satan with Deuteronomy 8:3. The forty-year/forty-day wilderness correspondence is therefore especially strong: Jesus consciously lives by Deuteronomy in the wilderness and remains faithful where Israel failed. “Jesus as the Bread of Life,” however, is a wider Johannine/manna trajectory and should not be confused with the direct quotation itself.
