Kohath’s Service: Holy Objects Are Covered before Transport
Numbers 4 now counts the Levites who are old enough for the heavy work of moving the sanctuary. Kohath receives the most sensitive assignment: the ark, table, lampstand, altars, and other holy furnishings. But the Kohathites do not walk in and pack them themselves. Aaron and his sons first cover and prepare the holy objects; only then may Kohath come to carry them.\ \ Where this fits in the story: Numbers 3 named Kohath’s custody. Numbers 4 turns that custody into a travel procedure. Numbers 7 will later make the distinction even more concrete by giving Kohath no wagons because their sanctuary burden is carried on the shoulders.\ \ Why it matters: portability does not make the holy ordinary. Israel can move with the sanctuary, but access and handling remain ordered.\ \ Evidence boundary: KJV “badgers’ skins” translates the uncertain Hebrew term tahash. The exact animal or leather is not secure enough to turn one proposed identification into a factual illustration.
