The Levite Census and Their Stations around the Tabernacle
Levi receives a different census from the military tribes: every male from one month old and upward is counted. The descendants of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari are then assigned different sides of the Tabernacle and different responsibilities. Gershon handles tent fabrics and curtains; Kohath is responsible for the sanctuary furnishings and holy objects; Merari handles the structural framework. Moses, Aaron, and the priests camp on the east before the sanctuary.\ \ Where this fits in the story: Numbers 2 put the Tabernacle and Levites in the middle of Israel. Numbers 3 zooms in and shows what that central zone actually looks like.\ \ Why it matters: holiness creates order. Access, transport, custody, and proximity are assigned rather than improvised.\ \ Evidence boundary: the clan figures create a genuine numerical problem: 7,500 + 8,600 + 6,200 equals 22,300, while verse 39 gives 22,000. A careful reading should state the received figures honestly; Deep Study tests the textual witnesses and proposed explanations.
