Wagons for Gershon and Merari; None for Kohath
The tribal leaders bring six wagons and twelve oxen for Tabernacle transport. Moses gives two wagons to Gershon and four to Merari because their loads differ, while Kohath receives none because the most holy furnishings are carried on shoulders. The gifts therefore turn Numbers 4’s job descriptions into practical travel logistics.
Numbers 4 assigns Gershon transport of the Tabernacle fabrics and coverings; Numbers 7 later gives the Gershonites two wagons and four oxen according to their service. The later gift of transport equipment matches the type of burden already assigned, showing ordered provision for the ministry rather than arbitrary distribution.
Numbers 4 assigns Merari the heavy structural components; Numbers 7 later gives the Merarites four wagons and eight oxen according to their service under Ithamar. The heavier structural load explains why Merari receives the larger wagon allocation, tying Numbers 7’s provision directly to Numbers 4’s assigned work.
Numbers 4 assigns Kohath the most holy furnishings but forbids direct touching; Numbers 7 gives Kohath no wagons because their sanctuary burden is to be carried on their shoulders.
