Hagar, Sarah, and the Children of Promise
Paul tells those who want to be under the law to “hear the law,” then rereads the Genesis story of Hagar, Sarah, Ishmael, and Isaac. He explicitly says the women are being treated symbolically/allegorically in relation to two covenants, contrasts present Jerusalem with “Jerusalem which is above,” and quotes Isaiah 54:1 before returning to Genesis 21:10. Believers are likened to Isaac as children of promise and freedom. Because this passage has often been used carelessly against Jews or Judaism, A responsible reading must show exactly what Paul says, how he uses Genesis and Isaiah, and where later anti-Jewish overreadings go beyond the text.
