Meeting God at the Mountain – A Divine Invitation
Three months after leaving Egypt, Israel arrives at the wilderness of Sinai. The mountain is not merely a stop on the route. God explains the Exodus to the people: they have seen what He did to Egypt, how He bore them on eagles’ wings, and how He brought them to Himself. The destination of redemption is therefore more than geographic freedom; God has rescued a people for covenant relationship with Him.
Exodus 19:5–6 gives Israel three major identity expressions: treasured possession, kingdom of priests, and holy nation. The Hebrew expression often rendered “peculiar treasure” or “treasured possession” refers to valued personal property. Israel is specially claimed by YHWH even while the passage immediately affirms that the whole earth belongs to Him. Their election gives them a particular covenant vocation within God’s universal kingship.
