New Heaven, New Earth, New Jerusalem, All Things New
Revelation 21:1 sees a new heaven and a new earth because the first heaven and earth have passed away and the sea is no more. The vision reaches back to Isaiah’s promise of new heavens and a new earth and answers the corruption introduced in Genesis. Revelation’s ending is not escape from creation but creation made new under God’s unhindered rule.
Revelation 21:1–4 brings together new creation, New Jerusalem, covenant dwelling, and the end of death and sorrow. The holy city descends from God like a prepared bride, and a great voice announces that God will dwell with humanity. The promise that tears, death, sorrow, crying, and pain will cease presents the final reversal of the curse and suffering that entered the biblical story.
Revelation 21:3 announces the goal toward which tabernacle and temple imagery has pointed: “the tabernacle of God is with men.” God dwells with His people, they belong to Him, and He is with them as their God. Covenant-presence language that appears repeatedly from the Torah through the prophets reaches its final, universal form in New Jerusalem.
Revelation 21:5 records the One on the throne declaring, “Behold, I make all things new.” The statement gathers prophetic new-creation promises into the climax of Revelation and answers the brokenness of the former order. The command to write because these words are faithful and true grounds Christian hope in God’s own promise rather than human optimism.
Revelation 21:5–8 joins the promise “I make all things new” with “It is done,” the Alpha-and-Omega title, free water of life, the conqueror’s inheritance, and the warning of the second death. The passage places gracious invitation and final judgment side by side: God freely gives life to the thirsty while rebellion that refuses Him reaches its final end.
Paul’s “Jerusalem above” belongs to the wider canonical trajectory that culminates in the New Jerusalem coming down from God in Revelation 21.
Galatians’ “new creation” belongs to the canonical renewal trajectory culminating when God makes all things new in Revelation 21.
Revelation 21 closes the Bible with “a new heaven and a new earth” and God making all things new, answering the creation horizon opened in Genesis 1.
Paul’s “new creation” in Christ opens toward Revelation’s new heaven, new earth, and declaration that God makes all things new.
