Second Peter’s contrast between one day and a thousand years strongly echoes Psalm 90:4, where a thousand years are like yesterday in God’s sight. The comparison teaches divine transcendence over human time, not a universal prophetic conversion formula of one day equaling exactly one thousand years.

Both 1 Thessalonians and 2 Peter describe the Day of the Lord as arriving like a thief, emphasizing unexpected judgment and the need for readiness. The phrase belongs to a wider Jesus/apostolic tradition; this record does not claim direct literary dependence between the two letters. The relationship should remain at its approved evidence level and should not be used to infer a more detailed chronology, identity, or literary dependence than the paired passages actually establish.

Both passages express God’s saving patience and desire rather than delight in human destruction, though they address different immediate questions. The approved evidence supports this relationship while keeping direct quotation, canonical development, and interpretive inference distinct.

Joel announces that the Day of the LORD is near in a scene of devastating judgment; 2 Peter 3 likewise speaks of the coming Day of the Lord and carries the theme toward final cosmic judgment.

Ezekiel says God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked but calls the wicked to turn and live; 2 Peter explains the Lord’s apparent delay as patience, “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

Isaiah 34:4 pictures the heavens rolled up and their host falling in a scene of divine judgment; 2 Peter 3:10–12 reuses the prophetic language of cosmic dissolution for the coming Day of the Lord.

Second Peter says the Day of the Lord will come “as a thief,” while Revelation records Jesus saying, “Behold, I come as a thief,” joining unexpected judgment with the need for watchfulness.

Second Peter’s description of the heavens passing away reaches a final-judgment horizon in Revelation 20:11, where earth and heaven flee from the face of the One on the great white throne.

Amos teaches that the Day of the LORD can bring terrifying judgment rather than presumed safety. Second Peter carries the Day-of-the-LORD trajectory to final cosmic judgment and the hope of new heavens and a new earth.
