Prayer for All and the One Mediator
The church is told to pray broadly—for all people and even for rulers—so believers may live peaceful, godly lives. The reason is theological: God our Saviour desires salvation and knowledge of the truth, there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and humanity, the man Christ Jesus.
The language reaches backward to Israel’s confession of the one God and forward through the gospel’s opening to the nations. Christ’s mediating work is described as self-giving ransom “for all,” and Paul’s own commission as teacher of the Gentiles embodies that widening mission. This is one of 1 Timothy’s clearest canonical junctions: monotheism, mediation, atonement, mission, prayer, and the inclusion of the nations converge in a few verses. The church prays for all because the gospel it guards is not tribal property.
