Violence against Your Brother — The Day of Jerusalem
Obadiah finally states the charge: “violence against thy brother Jacob.” Edom is condemned not only for direct violence but for standing aloof, gloating, entering the city, taking plunder, blocking fugitives, and handing survivors over during Jerusalem’s calamity. The repeated “day” language makes the indictment feel like a courtroom replay of the disaster.
Where this fits in the story: The Torah explicitly calls Edom Israel’s brother because Edom descends from Esau and Israel from Jacob. That makes the betrayal more than ordinary international hostility. The old family story has become a nations story.
