Mount Seir’s Perpetual Hatred
Mount Seir, representing Edom, is judged for enduring hostility toward Israel and for using Israel’s disaster as an opportunity for violence. Ezekiel treats “perpetual hatred” as morally consequential history: old hostility does not become righteous simply because Judah itself is under divine discipline.
Edom claims the territories of Israel and Judah as possessions while ignoring the LORD’s continuing relationship to the land. The oracle turns Edom’s rejoicing back upon itself: delight in another people’s desolation becomes the measure by which its own arrogance is judged.
Ezekiel 35 accuses Mount Seir of perpetual hatred, bloodshed, and rejoicing over Israel’s desolation; Obadiah indicts Edom for violence and gloating in Judah’s calamity.
