The LORD Dwells in Zion: Holy, Fruitful, and Secure
Joel ends where the biblical story itself is heading: God dwelling with a holy people in a restored place overflowing with life. Zion is holy, Judah endures, mountains drip with new wine, waters flow, and a fountain comes from the house of the LORD. That sanctuary-river image belongs beside Ezekiel’s river from the temple, Zechariah’s living waters from Jerusalem, and ultimately Revelation’s river of life from the throne of God and the Lamb. But the final thread is even larger than the river: Joel closes, “the LORD dwelleth in Zion,” while Revelation 21 announces the New Jerusalem and declares that God will dwell with redeemed humanity. Egypt and Edom remain warnings that violence and innocent blood are judged. Joel’s closing hope therefore reaches toward the New Testament’s final vision: divine presence, holiness, life, and restored creation together.
