Edom Refuses Israel Passage
Moses appeals to Edom as a related people, asks for peaceful passage along the king’s highway, and promises not to damage fields or vineyards. Edom refuses with armed force, so Israel turns away rather than invading. Obadiah later condemns Edom for violence against “thy brother Jacob.”
Numbers 20 has Israel address Edom as “thy brother Israel”; Obadiah condemns Edom for violence against “thy brother Jacob.” The earlier Torah kinship language makes Edom’s later violence especially serious: Obadiah condemns betrayal within an already acknowledged brother relationship.
