The Son of Man Judges the Nations
Matthew 25 answers Matthew 24's uncertainty with one repeated command: be ready by being faithful. The wise bridesmaids prepare for delay; the servants are accountable for what was entrusted to them; and the Son of Man judges the nations, identifying himself with 'the least.'
The Son of Man sits on his glorious throne and separates nations like a shepherd dividing sheep and goats. The surprise is that acts toward “the least of these my brethren”—feeding, welcoming, clothing, visiting—are treated as acts toward Jesus himself.
Where this fits in the story: Daniel 7 supplies the enthroned Son-of-Man kingdom horizon; shepherd separation and care for vulnerable people are deeply biblical.
Where Scripture takes it next: the passion begins immediately, and the King who judges the nations becomes the rejected prisoner mocked by earthly powers.
Evidence boundary: interpreters debate whether “my brethren” means Jesus’ disciples/missionaries specifically, needy people generally, or a combination. The passage certainly demands concrete mercy, but the identification should be discussed rather than assumed.
Parable focus — Sheep and Goats: Matthew certainly gives a final-judgment scene and uses a shepherd’s separation as its comparison. Calling the whole unit a “parable” is a useful study convention, but the genre is less explicit than many numbered parable lists imply, and the precise identity of “these my brethren” remains debated.
Feeding, welcoming, clothing, and caring for vulnerable people belong to Torah and prophetic mercy/justice traditions. The identity of 'the least of these my brethren' remains debated and must not be reduced prematurely.

Joel gathers the nations before the LORD for judgment; Jesus depicts all nations gathered before the Son of Man seated on his throne. The New Testament places the final nations-judgment scene under the authority of Christ.
Jesus’ own teaching places the Son of Man in glory with angels at final judgment; Paul likewise presents Jesus coming with angels to judge and to be glorified among his people. Jesus’ teaching and Paul’s teaching converge on the Son’s glorious coming with angels for final judgment.
