The Nations Answer for Scattering and Selling God’s People
Joel turns from Judah’s restoration to the nations’ accountability. God gathers the nations for judgment over scattering his people, dividing his land, plundering sacred treasures, and trafficking Judahites far from home. Tyre, Sidon, Philistia, Javan, and the Sabeans place the oracle in the real network of Mediterranean and Arabian peoples, yet the theological center is measure-for-measure justice: what the nations did returns upon their own head. The scene belongs to Scripture’s larger nations-and-Israel thread, where God judges violence while refusing to abandon his inheritance. Jesus later describes the Son of Man coming in glory, sitting upon his throne, and having “all nations” gathered before him for judgment. Matthew does not quote Joel directly, but the New Testament carries Joel’s gathered-nations judgment toward a Christ-centered final horizon.
