Matthew explicitly places Judah, Tamar, Perez, and Zerah from Genesis 38 inside the genealogy of Jesus. The connection is genealogical and certain: the complicated Judah–Tamar story becomes part of the actual ancestral line through which Matthew traces the Messiah.

Genesis 29 records the birth of Judah to Jacob and Leah. Matthew 1:2 later names the same genealogical sequence—Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and “Judas and his brethren”—placing Judah directly in the ancestry of Jesus.

Genesis 49 assigns royal prominence and enduring ruler imagery to Judah. Matthew 1 explicitly traces Jesus through Jacob and Judah, placing the Messiah inside the tribal line to which Jacob gave the royal blessing.

Matthew’s genealogy explicitly names Tamar, Boaz, Ruth, Obed, Jesse, and David, carrying Ruth’s closing genealogy forward into the ancestry of Jesus Christ and making Ruth’s Messianic relevance explicit in the New Testament.

Matthew identifies Solomon's mother indirectly as 'her that had been the wife of Urias,' deliberately recalling the David-Bathsheba-Uriah story rather than simply naming Bathsheba.

Matthew identifies Solomon's mother indirectly as 'her that had been the wife of Urias,' deliberately recalling the David-Bathsheba-Uriah story rather than simply naming Bathsheba.

Matthew's royal and postexilic genealogy overlaps substantially with the Davidic line preserved in Chronicles, including the sequence through Solomon and the exilic figures Jeconiah, Shealtiel, and Zerubbabel. The differences and omissions require a separate genealogy study rather than being hidden.

Matthew makes the Babylonian deportation a structural turning point and names Jeconiah in the genealogy, directly tying Jesus' ancestry to the royal crisis and exile narrated in Kings.

Matthew explicitly includes Zerubbabel in the genealogy of Jesus Christ, carrying Haggai’s Davidic figure forward into the New Testament royal line. Named-person evidence: Matthew explicitly inserts Zerubbabel into Jesus Christ’s genealogy, creating a direct genealogical bridge from Haggai’s Davidic governor to Jesus.

Numbers identifies Nahshon son of Amminadab as Judah’s tribal leader; Matthew’s genealogy later names Nahshon in the same father-son line on the way from Abraham and Judah to David and Jesus Christ.

Matthew explicitly places Rahab in the genealogy leading to David and Jesus, showing that the Canaanite woman spared at Jericho became part of Israel’s covenant history and the Messianic line.

Matthew opens Jesus’ genealogy by naming Him Son of David and tracing the line through Jesse and David, directly carrying the royal line established in Samuel into the Gospel’s opening identity claim.

Second Kings closes with the captive Davidic king Jehoiachin lifted from prison and given honorable status in Babylon; Matthew’s genealogy later carries Jeconiah through the exile toward Jesus. The final Kings scene thus becomes a canonical hinge from failed monarchy to enduring Davidic hope without requiring a simplistic one-to-one genealogical sequence.

Second Kings 24 narrates Jehoiachin’s deportation and the apparent collapse of Davidic monarchy; Matthew 1 explicitly carries Jeconiah across the exile divide inside the genealogy of Jesus. The Gospel therefore turns what looked like dynastic termination into a bridge in the messianic line rather than treating exile as the end of David’s story.

Second Kings 11 preserves the Davidic dynasty through Athaliah’s attempted purge and the hidden survival of Joash; Matthew’s genealogy later presents that same royal line as culminating in Jesus. The theological continuity is strong, but Matthew’s genealogy may telescope generations, so the relationship is dynastic/canonical rather than a claim of exhaustive biological listing.

First Chronicles preserves the Judah-to-David ancestry through Perez, Hezron, Ram, Nahshon, Boaz, Obed, and Jesse; Matthew explicitly incorporates the same royal family line into Jesus’ genealogy. The relationship is genealogical reuse that carries Israel’s ancestral history into the Gospel’s presentation of the Messiah.

Zerubbabel, a leader of Ezra’s return, appears again in Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus after the Babylonian deportation. The connection shows that the postexilic restoration community carries forward the Davidic family line that the Gospel traces to Christ, even though Ezra never restores Zerubbabel as a reigning king.
