Zerubbabel: My Servant, My Signet
Haggai’s final oracle widens from one small Persian province to the overthrow of kingdoms, chariots, horses, and riders—and then narrows to one man: Zerubbabel. He is called the LORD’s servant, chosen, and made “as a signet.” The language gives this Davidic descendant a startling place in the book’s future hope without ever calling him king.
Where this fits in the story: Jeremiah 22:24 had used the signet image negatively for King Coniah/Jehoiachin: even if he were a signet on the LORD’s right hand, he would be plucked off. Zerubbabel is a descendant of that royal line. Haggai reuses the same image in the opposite direction—chosen rather than torn off.
