The Covenant with Levi and the Failure of the Priests
Malachi turns the priesthood’s privilege into a warning. The Lord had given a covenant of life and peace associated with Levi, and the faithful priestly ideal was reverence, truthful instruction, upright walking, and turning many away from iniquity. The present priests have done the opposite: they have caused many to stumble at the law and shown partiality.
Where this fits in the story: Numbers 25:10–13 gives Phinehas a “covenant of peace” and a continuing priesthood, while Deuteronomy 33:8–11 describes Levi as teaching God’s judgments and offering sacrifice. Leviticus 10:11 likewise makes teaching part of priestly responsibility.
